Trolling For Redfish…….A Slow Day Alternative

Here’s great advice for fishing for Redfish during the warmer months! Trolling as a method to target these fish when they’re less active due to warm water temperatures can indeed be effective. Here’s a concise summary of your points, along with some tips:

  1. Understand Feeding Behavior:
    • Redfish can become lethargic and feed in short, unpredictable bursts in warmer waters.
  2. Advantages of Trolling:
    • Covers water faster.
    • Unconventional but effective, especially when Redfish are scattered and less active.
  3. Bait Choices:
    • Use natural baits like mullet, menhaden, mud minnows, and pinfish.
    • Live baits should be hooked through both lips (from the bottom up) or through both nostrils for the best results.
  4. Presentation:
    • Avoid using weights and floats.
    • If necessary, add a small split shot to keep the bait at the desired depth.
    • Troll slowly, which can be achieved using a trolling motor for better maneuverability around structures and grassy edges where Redfish feed.
  5. Chumming:
    • Throwing out cut-up bait for chum can attract and concentrate small schools of Redfish.

Trolling can indeed be a game-changer on slow days and offers a new strategy to engage Redfish when traditional methods aren’t yielding results. Happy fishing!
