Angler of the Month……Capt. Rom Whitaker — NC Outer Banks
Capt. Rom Whitaker is one of the most respected offshore captains on the Carolina coast, not because of one tournament win, but because of a lifetime spent on the water out of Hatteras Village, North Carolina. Originally from Kinston, Whitaker made the transition from a corporate career to full-time charter fishing in the late 1980s, a move that would define the next four decades of his life.
Based at Hatteras Harbor Marina, Whitaker runs the boat Release, a name that has become well known in offshore circles. His current boat, a 53-foot Bobby Sullivan sportfisher, has been his platform since the late 1990s, following an earlier 47-foot Omie Tillett also named Release. Over the years, he has built a reputation for consistency, fishing more than 200 days a year and targeting the species that define Carolina offshore fishing, blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, and dolphin.
While Whitaker has competed in tournaments for decades, his breakthrough moment came in 2024 at the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, one of the most prestigious offshore events in the country. After nearly 40 years of fishing that tournament, his team landed a 504-pound blue marlin to win the Fabulous Fisherman’s Division, earning a payout of more than $1.7 million. It was not just a win, it was the result of persistence, experience, and a deep understanding of the fishery.
Beyond tournament success, Whitaker’s influence extends throughout the Hatteras fishing community. He has spent years mentoring young mates and captains, helping shape the next generation of offshore anglers. His knowledge of the waters around Hatteras Inlet, one of the most challenging and constantly shifting inlets on the East Coast, has also earned him respect among fellow captains who rely on experience and judgment to navigate it safely.
Whitaker has also been involved in the broader fishing community through education and advocacy. He has worked as an instructor with the NC State Sport Fishing School and has served on advisory panels related to highly migratory species, contributing his experience to discussions that impact the future of offshore fishing.
What sets Whitaker apart is not just his ability to catch fish, but his longevity and consistency in a fishery that demands constant adjustment. The Carolina coast is not forgiving, and reputations are built over time, not in a single season. His career reflects that reality, steady, disciplined, and rooted in experience.
On this coast, names are earned, not given, and Rom Whitaker’s name is one that continues to carry weight for a reason.
