Boat Trailer Care….Avoid The Obvious

Boat trailer care is one of the most overlooked parts of boating, yet a trailer failure can ruin a trip faster than a boat problem. A few minutes of maintenance can prevent expensive repairs and dangerous roadside breakdowns.

Before Every Trip

  • Check tire pressure, including the spare tire.
  • Inspect tires for cracks, dry rot, or uneven wear.
  • Test all lights, turn signals, and brake lights.
  • Verify that the winch strap is secure and in good condition.
  • Make sure safety chains are attached properly.
  • Check that the hitch is locked and the coupler is fully engaged.

After Launching in Saltwater

Saltwater is a trailer’s worst enemy.

  • Rinse the entire trailer thoroughly with fresh water.
  • Pay special attention to brakes, springs, axles, hubs, and wiring.
  • Flush brake components if your trailer has a brake-flushing system.
  • Allow the trailer to dry before storage when possible.

Wheel Bearings

Bearing failure is one of the most common causes of trailer breakdowns.

  • Check bearing protectors regularly.
  • Repack bearings annually or every 10,000–12,000 miles.
  • Replace worn seals immediately.
  • Feel the hubs after towing. Excessive heat may indicate a problem.

Trailer Brakes

  • Inspect brake pads, rotors, drums, and lines annually.
  • Check brake fluid levels on hydraulic systems.
  • Look for corrosion, leaks, or seized components.

Frame and Suspension

  • Inspect the frame for rust, cracks, or damaged welds.
  • Examine leaf springs for broken leaves or severe corrosion.
  • Tighten loose bolts and hardware.
  • Touch up chipped paint to prevent rust from spreading.

Winch and Strap

  • Inspect the winch cable or strap for fraying.
  • Lubricate moving parts of the winch.
  • Replace damaged straps before they fail at the ramp.

Electrical System

  • Check wiring for cracked insulation or corrosion.
  • Clean trailer light connections.
  • Consider LED lights if you frequently launch in water.

Storage Tips

  • Store on a hard surface when possible.
  • Keep tires out of direct sunlight for long periods.
  • Raise the tongue slightly to encourage water drainage.
  • Cover the winch and coupler if stored outdoors.
