The History Of The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament
Few fishing tournaments have earned the reputation and prestige of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, one of the most celebrated offshore fishing events in the world. Held annually in Morehead City, North Carolina, the tournament has become a cornerstone of sportfishing culture along the Atlantic coast and a major economic driver for the region.
The tournament began in 1957, when a small group of local businessmen and fishing enthusiasts organized a competition to promote the area’s outstanding offshore fishing. Named after the “Big Rock,” an underwater formation located approximately 40 miles offshore, the event was designed to showcase the rich waters where blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, and other pelagic species gather.
That first tournament was a modest affair, attracting just a handful of boats and anglers. No one could have imagined that it would eventually grow into one of the richest and most respected billfish tournaments in the world. As word spread about the exceptional fishing off North Carolina’s coast, participation increased steadily throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
The waters off the state’s Crystal Coast are uniquely positioned along the warm currents of the Gulf Stream, creating ideal conditions for blue marlin and other migratory gamefish. This natural advantage helped establish the tournament as a premier destination for serious offshore anglers.
Over the decades, the Big Rock evolved from a local competition into an international event. Advances in sportfishing boats, electronics, and tackle brought larger fleets and bigger catches. Prize purses grew dramatically as participation expanded, eventually reaching millions of dollars in potential winnings.

The tournament has also reflected changes in conservation ethics within sportfishing. While earlier generations focused primarily on harvesting fish, modern competitors increasingly embrace catch-and-release practices. Today, released billfish earn valuable points, helping preserve fish populations while maintaining the excitement of competition.
Beyond the fishing itself, the Big Rock has become a week-long celebration. Thousands of spectators gather at the waterfront each year to watch daily weigh-ins, where anglers bring in qualifying catches and crowds cheer as giant fish are hoisted onto the scales. The event generates significant tourism and supports local businesses throughout the Crystal Coast region.
More than six decades after its founding, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament remains a symbol of offshore fishing excellence. What began as a small local contest has grown into a world-class event that attracts elite anglers, showcases North Carolina’s legendary fishing grounds, and continues to honor the traditions and camaraderie that make sportfishing unique.
Today, winning the Big Rock is considered one of the highest achievements in offshore tournament fishing, a testament to the tournament’s enduring legacy and its place in the history of American sportfishing.
