The Ten-Pound Legend…..A Bass Fishing Story

The morning air over North Carolina carried the heavy scent of pine and lake water as the first light of dawn slowly crept across Lake Waccamaw. Fog rested low on the surface like a drifting blanket, hiding the distant shoreline and softening every sound except the occasional splash of feeding fish near the cypress trees.

For Tommy Grayson, the lake had always felt alive. He had spent most of his life fishing its quiet coves and hidden timber lines, learning every curve of the shoreline the same way some men learn city streets. Long before modern electronics and depth finders, fishermen relied on instinct, memory, and patience. Tommy trusted all three.

On this particular July morning, the lake seemed unusually still. Even the birds remained quiet as his small aluminum boat drifted toward an old stretch of submerged timber near the southern bank. Beneath the dark water, tangled roots and fallen trees created the perfect hiding place for largemouth bass.

Tommy worked his spinnerbait slowly through the shadows, allowing the lure to pass close to the timber before reeling it into open water. Cast after cast produced nothing. The rising sun slowly burned away the fog, revealing long reflections of cypress trees stretching across the lake’s surface.

Then it happened.

The water erupted beside the timber with a violent explosion that shattered the calm morning silence. The rod bent sharply in Tommy’s hands as the fish surged downward with incredible force. Line peeled from the reel while the bass dove beneath the boat and disappeared into the dark water below.

For several long moments, the fish controlled everything.

The boat drifted sideways as Tommy fought to keep pressure on the line without snapping it against the submerged wood. Sweat formed across his forehead despite the cool morning air. The bass stayed deep, moving with slow powerful runs that revealed its unusual size.

When the fish finally surfaced, the enormous largemouth seemed almost unreal. Its wide mouth broke through the water first, followed by the thick green body that flashed beneath the sunlight before diving once again. Tommy had caught thousands of bass over the years, but very few had ever looked like this one.

The fight continued for several exhausting minutes before the fish finally weakened enough to bring alongside the boat. The largemouth bass weighed more than ten pounds — the largest Tommy had ever landed from Lake Waccamaw.

For a moment, he simply stared at it.

The fish represented more than a personal record. It carried the history of the lake itself — years of survival through storms, changing seasons, fishing pressure, and harsh winters. The old bass had grown large by outlasting almost everything around it.

After a few quick photographs, Tommy lowered the fish back into the water.

The largemouth remained motionless for several seconds before slowly disappearing beneath the dark surface, vanishing into the same hidden timber where the battle had begun.

The lake soon returned to silence.

Years later, Tommy would still remember that morning clearly — not because of the size of the fish, but because of the feeling that some moments in nature are too special to keep.
