September Teal….. Carolina Waterfowl Season

Waterfowl hunting usually brings images of cold fronts, heavy jackets and winter mornings, but September teal hunting along the Carolina coast is a completely different experience. Warm temperatures, mosquitoes and lightweight clothing replace frozen boat ramps, while fast moving teal provide an early opportunity for waterfowl hunters to return to the marsh.

North Carolina’s 2026 September teal season runs from September 10 through September 19 in the area east of U.S. Highway 17. That makes the season particularly relevant to hunters in the eastern and coastal portions of the state. Because special season regulations are specific, hunters should verify current North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission requirements before heading into the field.

Blue winged teal are among the earliest ducks to migrate south. Their movement can be influenced by weather hundreds of miles away, meaning a hot day in North Carolina doesn’t necessarily indicate whether new birds will arrive. A weather change farther north can push migrating teal into Carolina wetlands while local temperatures remain decidedly summerlike.

That makes scouting extremely important. A shallow impoundment holding birds several days ago may contain very few today, while another location can receive new migrants overnight. Hunters who have access to several areas should continue checking them rather than assuming last week’s birds will remain in place.

Shallow water and available food are major attractions. Teal frequently use marshes, impoundments and other wetlands where aquatic vegetation, seeds and invertebrates provide feeding opportunities. Water doesn’t need to be deep. In fact, shallow feeding areas can be particularly attractive.

Decoy spreads can remain relatively simple. A modest group positioned where birds naturally want to land may be all that is necessary. Concealment is considerably more important than building an enormous spread. Teal can arrive quickly and low, and unnecessary movement in an exposed blind may cause them to change direction before reaching comfortable range.

Their speed creates another challenge. Hunters accustomed to larger ducks can underestimate how quickly teal cross the decoys. Smooth shotgun movement and good preparation are essential. A few preseason rounds of sporting clays can be especially useful before attempting shots at one of the fastest targets encountered in the marsh.

Bird identification is absolutely critical during a special teal season. Other waterfowl may be present, and hunters must positively identify a legal target before shooting. When there is uncertainty, the correct decision is allowing the bird to pass.

September teal hunting isn’t simply an early version of winter duck hunting. It has its own conditions, challenges and traditions. For coastal North Carolina hunters, the 2026 opportunity is happening right now. The season is brief, the weather is warm and the birds certainly aren’t going to slow down.
