A Day That Means More Than Fishing

I have had the privilege of going to many places and doing many things that would envy most people. I played professional golf against some of America’s best. I fished with many of the nation’s greatest anglers and story tellers. However, the Cape Fear Disabled Sportsman’s Fishing Tournament is the event that is without a doubt the closest to my heart. It displays determination, love of the sport and each other. I had never seen anything like it until my first visit. And it was a day I will never forget.

I  hope you’ll join me at this year’s event and gather your unforgettable member too.

Captain Tim Wilson, Editor & Chief,

On the 2nd Friday in May of each year, This 26th year being on May 8th,2026. On the beautiful shoreline in Kure Beach, North Carolina, something special will take place on The Kure Beach Pier. Something that goes far beyond rods, reels, and the thrill of the catch.

The Cape Fear Disabled Sportsman’s Fishing Tournament is not just an event…  it’s a reminder of what community, compassion, and the outdoors are truly all about.

Each year, more than 400 anglers with physical and intellectual challenges gather on the historic Kure Beach Pier for a day they look forward to long before the first cast is ever made. For many, it’s not just about fishing, it’s about belonging. It’s about being part of something bigger, surrounded by people who care, encourage, and celebrate every moment.

Volunteers line the pier before sunrise, preparing equipment, organizing teams, and most importantly, getting ready to share their time and hearts. These men and women don’t just assist, they connect. They laugh, they cheer, and they stand side by side with participants, turning what could be an ordinary day into something unforgettable.

As lines hit the water, smiles began to spread. Some anglers are seasoned; others are experiencing fishing for the very first time. But skill doesn’t matter here. What matters is the joy of the moment, the excitement of a bite, the encouragement from a volunteer, the pride in holding up a catch, and taking it to the scales, no matter the size.

Families gather nearby, watching with pride and gratitude. For them, this day represents opportunity, an opportunity for their loved ones to experience independence, confidence, and pure happiness in a setting that welcomes them completely.

The Cape Fear Disabled Sportsman’s Fishing Tournament stands as a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together with purpose. It’s not about competition. It’s about connections. It’s about dignity. And it’s about creating memories that will last long after the lines are reeled in.

On May 8th, the Kure Beach Pier won’t just be filled with anglers, it will be filled with heart. And for everyone involved, that’s the greatest catch of all.
