Suppressor Ownership Made Simple
The $200 Federal Transfer Tax Is Gone. Buying a Suppressor Has Never Been Easier.
For years, many firearm owners dismissed suppressor ownership because they believed the process was complicated, expensive, and time-consuming. Today, that’s changed dramatically. Beginning January 1, 2026, the federal transfer tax on suppressors was reduced to $0, making suppressor ownership more affordable than ever. Combined with today’s streamlined ATF eForms process—and the fact that individual eForm 4 applications are now being approved within days, although processing times vary—there has never been a better time to own a suppressor. As a third-generation, family-owned firearms business proudly serving Eastern North Carolina, we hear many of the same questions every day at Carolina Caliber: • Are suppressors legal in North Carolina? • Who can purchase one? • Is buying a suppressor complicated? • Can I purchase a suppressor online? • Do I still have to pay the $200 tax stamp? • How long does the approval process take? The good news? The process is far simpler than most people realize. At Carolina Caliber, we’ve guided countless firearm owners through the suppressor purchasing process. From selecting the right suppressor to completing electronic fingerprints, passport photos, and the ATF eForms application, our team is committed to making the process simple, accurate, and stress-free. Whether you’re purchasing your first suppressor or adding another to your collection, here’s what you need to know.
ARE SUPPRESSORS LEGAL IN NORTH CAROLINA?
Yes. Suppressors are legal to own and use in North Carolina when purchased in accordance with applicable federal law.
To purchase a suppressor from a licensed dealer, you must be at least 21 years of age, legally eligible to possess a firearm, and successfully complete the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives (ATF) approval process. Unlike some states, North Carolina does not require an additional state permit or license beyond the federal application and approval process.
If you have questions about suppressor ownership, current regulations, or the purchasing process, our knowledgeable staff is always available to explain the requirements and guide you through every step.
